about

Background:

Eugene is the first track on Benedict's third album The Lines of Parallel Trees (2007):

The album version is played by Benedict solo.

This live version from 2006 is played with Jonathan Brain on piano. It was recorded in Old Perth Boys School, where Benedict put on two shows in 2005 and 2006. These were the first shows Benedict organized outside the pub music scene, in acoustically appealing venues.

In subsequent years Benedict equipped himself with sound and lighting gear, and put on shows in halls and other venues in and around Perth, including at North Perth Town Hall, Darlington Town Hall, Toodyay Town Hall and Maylands Yacht Club.

Benedict and Jonathan got to know each other in 2005 and 2006, playing live as a duo several times.

Jonathan plays on three of Benedict's albums.

On The Lines of Parallel Trees (2007) Jonathan plays piano on two odes to friendship:

lyrics

Song words:

It must feel strange for you to drive through these streets

That you used to know very well

In the high tide of the school holidays

To a place where children play

Swinging from side to side

On amusement park rides

Calling out with their eyes wide

To their bored mothers

It must feel strange for you to see this place again

Where you used to live

And have your whole former life summarized

Inside your small windscreen

With this fighter pilot boy

In the back seat of your car

Who’s three years younger and nearer to you now

Than your own son

Big-eyed boy, girls became too easy for you

To have and to hold

And I know that your old friend was shocked

When he saw you last year

By the changes in your soul

Now that you are without wife

And soon will be leaving

Now as ever without men in your life

Who will hold you ?

I think I know what you are looking for

And I don’t think that you’ll find it

Turning up at all these strangers’ front doors

To see if they’ll have you in

I think I know what you are looking for

And I hope one day that you’ll find it

Built around you, strong and real

My always lonely American friend
